Kang bags 2009 Australian Junior Squash Title
National junior player Samuel Kang became the first Singaporean to clinch the Australian Junior Championships held in Sydney this year from 25th - 29th September.
Kang, 18, a four-time Singapore National Junior Age Group Champion and captain of the 2006 Singapore Combined Schools Team, edged Australia's top three juniors en route to winning one of the most prestigious tournaments in the region, including a tense 5-setter over Sonal Seth of Queensland in the final (9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10).
Since its inception in 1958, the Junior Men's title at the Australian Junior Championships has traditionally been dominated by Australians, including current world No.6 David Palmer (former world No.1) and former world No. 16 Stewart Boswell (former world top-10).
Kang's achievement in this tournament probably ranks as one of the best ever attained by a Singaporean junior squash player. With a few more major international junior tournaments coming up toward the end of this year, he might have a good chance to bag another junior title for Singapore before he turns 19 in December.
Kang also intends to join the PSA (Professional Squash Association) Men's circuit next year once he moves past his eligibility as a junior, which will give him the chance to travel and compete in professional squash tournaments around the world.Kang has demonstrated the potential to become a strong competitor in the international squash scene, and given the right amound of support, he could very well be the next big star of Singapore's sporting world.
On behalf of the Singapore squash community, we congratulate Samuel on his stellar achievement in Australia and look forward to more good things to come from this promising young star.

23 Aug 2009 - Important Notice
Kallang Squash Courts Temporarily Closed
The Squash Courts at the Kallang Squash and Tennis Centre will unfortunately be closed for renovation works from the 24th August - 14th November 2009.
This is part of the Singapore Sports Council's plan to upgrade the Tennis courts, storeroom area, and public restrooms in preparation of the upcoming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010. As Squash is not an event in the Youth Olympics, the courts have also been slated to be used as holding areas during the games, and thus will also undergo minor tweaks and repairs.
In the meantime, the Yio Chu Kang Sports Centre might be the best alternative for public squash courts. National training will also resume at these courts tentatively. The SSRA seeks your understanding in these times of inconvenience; members of the squash community are also urged to update us on information about available Squash Courts around the country for the benefit of players who are seeking courts to play in.

Samuel Kang bags Under-19 Champs in KL
Singapore's Samuel Kang emerged as the SportExcel National Junior Circuit Grand Finals Boys Under-19 Champion at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
For Samuel, who took time out from National Service to play in Kuala Lumpur, it redeemed his defeat in last year's Under-19 final by defeating a deflated Adeen Idrakie Bakhtiar of Selangor 16-18, 11-8, 11-3, 11-1.
"I came in second a few times this year (on the circuit) and I thought I played quite well. Adeen may be a little tired from yesterday (Saturday) when he had a hard match but I really wanted to win this as it is my last year as a junior," said Kang.
Although several of Malaysia's top national juniors were absent from this event, Kang's achievement is nevertheless commendable and a wonderful tribute to the budding quality of Singapore's junior squash players.
Choy Siew Foong (Perak, Malaysia) took the Girls Under-19 title.
Also noteworthy was Singapore's Sherilyn Yang who emerged 5th place in the U-17 Girls division.
